The Damien Minton Gallery is proud to present in association with the William Rose Estate a substantial selection of paintings and works on paper by the pioneering Australian abstract painter, William Rose.

William Rose (1929-1997)is now being championed for his contribution to Australian modernism following the critical success of the just completed survey exhibiton, ‘William Rose, Composing Space’ at the Newcastle Region Art Gallery.

The career of this Newcastle born, self taught artist, developed quickly from his first showing in 1954 with the Contemporary Art Society, Sydney and the seminal ‘Direction 1’ show in 1956 at Macquarie Galleries which also featured John Olsen, Eric Smith, John passmore and Robert Klippel.
His extensive exhibiting career included a major solo exhibtion at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York in 1982.  We will be presenting work from that exhibtion as will as works on paper never before exhibited.

We invite you to read the 2011 catalogue essay on William Rose by the Assistant Director of the Newcastle, Tristan Sharp on our blog:
