Print CV

The themes in my work are oriented around how bodies are defined and constrained within cultural discourses with a focus on the language of biology and gender. I manipulate and reconfigure particular symbols, forms and concepts to create thematic groups of printmedia and metal objects to generate new ways to represent and think about bodies. In my current work I am using anatomical fragments of bodies as associative triggers to draw the viewer into the work and establish a connection between the familiar and invented forms.

The objects in metal depict organs in the body such as the heart and brain. The hand-cut patterns evoke the form, its function, fragility and beauty. Large 2D metal organs are suspended out from the wall with printmedia objects attached to the wall surface alongside them. The interrelationship created between the metal and printmedia pieces reinterprets the function of each organ.

An important element of my work is that the myriad high-relief print and metal objects appear to emerge from, and define the space in which they are situated and that together they create a dialogue that is not possible as disparate elements.

My working practice involves thinking through ideas over long periods then developing the concepts in writing, along with sketches and diagrams of shapes, colours and patterns. I consider how the forms relate to one another in space, before beginning to work with metal and printmedia. Although I prefer to plan out the various stages in my work I also allow change and chance to be part of the process.

Part of my practice involves re-using zinc etching plates to take impressions from and present as sculptural pieces. This combines my desire to recycle materials and link past work with new work.
