Over the past decade, Melbourne based artist David O’Brien has been exhibiting paintings, sculpture and prints with his recent work delving deeper into the oil painting medium. With subjects including dense tangled landscapes, masked children, boxers and nocturnal urban scenes, the paintings often employ dark humour and an ambiguity that can leave the viewer with a feeling of disquiet.
The paintings are deeply atmospheric with glowing light piercing undergrowth and spotlight figures caught in the viewers gaze.
“To me the most important part of creating a painting is capturing the light.
It sets the mood of the work and is crucial in lending a sense of theatre to a scene.”
O’Brien’s recent solo exhibitions include ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Collect & Display’ at Nellie Castan Gallery, ‘Tunnel Vision’ at 162 Flinders Lane and ‘Branded’ at Span Gallery.
